Some Macs will automatically extract Zip files when they are downloaded, while on others it is necessary to extract the contents of the Zip file after it has downloaded. The important thing with this is that it must be “extracted” (un-zipped) and you have to manually put it into the correct place. The ZIP version from should still work, even though it is a bit old. This means that if you are a user of previous Audacity versions on Windows and had installed the optional FFmpeg library then you must now install the 64-bit versions of the FFmpeg library, otherwise your imports and exports that depend upon FFmpeg will no longer work. I don’t have an M1/M2 Mac, and I’ve never use Homebrew. Audacity on Windows is now a 64-bit application. Unfortunately the latest instructions from the new manual don’t provide much detail other than saying to use Homebrew: Therefore, must still use an online mp4 to mp3 converter, then load the desired file into the player. Apparently the installer doesn’t work with the new M1 / M2 chips. The installation by either the exe or zip files create C:\Program Files\FFmpeg For Audacity folder with all the contents with the drivers supposedly installed, but the Audacity player will not permit mp4 files to be loaded.
